Lori Betz began her study for art at the age of ten with private lessons. She had a natural aptitude and loved sketching and exploring color, but when she was in high school a wonderful art teacher introduced her to sculpture and she began to study portraiture. She then studied with as many different instructors as possible so that she might glean from each of them something unique. She has studied in Greece with artist Alan Bain, and in Cortona, Italy with artist Alex Deya. She has also spent a year in Japan at the Shigaraki Cultural Institute as an artist in residence.
Betz was pursuing a masters degree in studio art when she decided that institutionalized study could only take her so far and decided to open her own studio and gallery and to immerse herself in the process.
Betz Art Gallery was located in the heart of Downtown Houston, Texas for 15 years until she decided to dedicate herself solely to her own work with a concentration on sculpture.
